Alabama Drivers Education

If you’re a teenager in Alabama, it is important that you understand that the Alabama Department of Public Safety requires that you have a driver’s license issued in Alabama before you begin driving. Learners’ licenses are available to you if you are fifteen (15) years old, Class D driver licenses are available to you at age sixteen (16) and if you’re interested in driving a motorcycle you can obtain a license at age fourteen (14).

In order for you to apply for a new driver’s license, you must present two (2) forms of identification which may include any of the following:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • Valid Passport
  • Alabama Identification card
  • Naturalization papers

If for any reason you do not have a photo identification card you will need to provide three (3) forms of identification.

You will also need to provide the following items:

  • Proof of insurance for your automobile
  • If you are transferring your drivers license from another state, you should be prepared to present that drivers license along with your Social Security card and one additional form of identification
  • You will need to have $28.00 cash which you will bring to the Alabama Department of Safety ($5.00 testing fee as well as $23.00 licensing fee)
  • If you are under the age of 19, you must provide a completed enrollment form or proof of graduation. Click here for the form

Before taking your driving test, you will want to obtain the Drivers Handbook which is published by the Alabama Department of Safety. In addition to instructions on how to apply for your first license, this booklet will also help you learn about Alabama’s rules of the road. Teen drivers are also required to complete thirty (30) hours of driving time or to pass a drivers education course which must be state approved. You will need to provide verification forms to prove that you’ve met these requirements.

Since Alabama is a state that requires graduated licenses for student drivers there are some rules you need to be aware of:

  1. a fifteen year old (15) with a valid permit is authorized to drive only when with a licensed driver who is a parent, legal guardian or person who is twenty-one (21) years old and is in the front drivers seat.
  2. A sixteen (16) year old must have a parent or guardians permission to receive a license and drive without supervision; have provided a verification form and complete thirty (30) hours drive time; or provide proof that you have completed an approved drivers education course;
  3. If you are sixteen (16) or seventeen (17) and have had your license less than six (6) months you may not drive between midnight and six (6) am unless you are (1) accompanied by a licensed parent, guardian or twenty one (21) year old with parent or guardians consent; (2) going to or coming from school, work or a religious sponsored event or (3) driving for medical, fire or law enforcement emergencies and there may be no more than three (3) of your friends in the vehicle at a time.

Any violation of any of these important restrictions may result in an extension of these restrictions until you turn eighteen (18).
