Alaska Drivers Education


In Alaska, the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) titles all vehicles and provides licenses to drivers statewide. All adults over age sixteen who need evidence of vehicle ownership or need to have a drivers license issued or renewed a serviced by the Division of Motor Vehicles. In addition, the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles is responsible for the administration of Alaska’s point system and collection of vehicle registration taxes.

As of December 31, 2004, if you are under the age the age of 18 the following rules apply to you:

  1. your parent or legal guardian is required to provide proof you have had 40 hours of driving experience and minimally 10 of those hours must include driving in inclement weather and nighttime driving;

  2. you cannot have been convicted of any traffic violations for 6 months prior to applying for your license

  3. your license will be provisional

  4. provisional licenses are required for not less than 6 months before transferring to a regular drivers license

  5. if you are found guilty of a traffic violation while you have a provisional license you must wait 6 additional months to be eligible for a regular license

  6. parental (or guardian) approval is required for a regular license

Once you obtain a provisional license the following rules apply to you:

    1. you cannot have a passenger (except a brother or sister) under the age of 21 in the car with you

    2. you are not allowed to drive between 1am and 5am UNLESS you are accompanied by someone 21 that is properly licensed or are driving to or from work or for work (along the most direct route)

Once you reach the age of 18, these restrictions will no longer apply, however any failure to follow these restrictions can result in a penalty and/or point violation that will appear on your driving record.

If you are applying for your driver’s license you will need the following forms of identification:

  1. Document proving your legal name

    1. US Birth certificate, original or certified copy

    2. Current passport issued by the US or Canada

    3. Alaska learner’s permit or State Identification Card

    4. Military Identification card (active duty, retiree or reservist)

    5. Certificate of Naturalization, Citizenship or Birth Abroad

    6. Passport with appropriate immigration documents

Note: If you have changed your name so that it no longer is the same as on your birth certificate one of the following documents will be required to show proof of that change (all originals or government certified copies):

  • Current US passport

  • Amended birth certificate

  • Adoption, divorce, marriage certificates

  • certificate of Dissolution, Divorce or Annulment

  • Certificate of Naturalization

  • Certificate of Name Change

  1. Social Security Card

    1. Original Social Security Card

    2. Letter from SSA which verifies name and number

    3. Letter from SSA which states you have not received a SS number

  1. Verification of residential address (cannot show a PO Box or other mail stop)

    1. Current utility bill

    2. Alaska voter registration card

    3. Alaska title or registration (not more than 30 days old)

    4. Pay stub

    5. Medical Assistance Card

    6. Public Assistance Card

    7. Bank statement or cancelled check

    8. Copy of lease agreement or mortgage documents

You must also pass a written knowledge test (or present a valid Alaska Learner’s permit), pass a road test and a vision test prior to receiving your drivers license.
