Kansas Drivers Education

Kansas teens must first obtain an instruction permit by presenting acceptable proof of identity; being at least 14 years of age and have the consent of a parent or guardian In addition, you will be required to pass both vision & written tests. Any Instruction Permit holder may drive at any time when accompanied by a licensed adult driver who is at least 18 years of age. In order for you to receive a Restricted License, you must have held an Instruction Permit for at least 6 months.

Kansas offers two Restricted Driver’s Licenses, Class C and Class M. for either of these, you must present acceptable proof of identity, be at least 15 years and less than 16, obtain parental/guardian consent, have completed an approved Driver’s Education course, have had your instruction permit for not less than 6 months, have completed 25 hours of supervised driving and if you are under 16, you must complete 50 hours of driving time. Prior to turning 16, the 50 hours must be supervised and at least 10 of those hours must be completed in night-time driving conditions. Restricted licenses allow you to drive to and from school (but not to school activities); to, from or in connection with any job or farm related work, or when you are accompanied by a licensed driver 18 years of age or older.

Drivers who are between the ages of 16 and drivers may present acceptable proof of identity, pass a full written, driving and vision test (or provide a Driver’s Education Completion Slip) and provide an affidavit that proves they have completed 50 hours of adult supervised driving, with 10 of those hours being at night.

If you are under the age of 16 and are convicted of two or more driving violation while you have a restricted license, the restriction will be in effect until you are 17 years old. If you have a Farm Permit or a Restricted license, you are not allowed to have any passengers under the age of 18 in the car with you unless they are your brothers or sisters – this is considered a moving violation if you disregard this restriction.
