Louisiana Drivers Education

Louisiana since 1998 has offered a Class E Learners Permit for teens ages fifteen and sixteen. This permit allows the teen to drive if accompanied by an adult licensed driver who is above the age of twenty one – or with a licensed brother or sister over the age of eighteen. If the teen is accompanied by a Driver Education Teacher the law does allow that there may be more than one driver education student in the vehicle.
To convert your Class E Learners Permit to a Class E Intermediate License at age 16, you must successful complete an approved drivers education course, and pass a written and visual test administered by the Office of Motor Vehicles.
Your Intermediate License will allow you to drive between 5am and 11pm and you may drive before or after those hours if you are accompanied by another licensed driver over the age of 21. This license allows for immediate family members or fellow driver’s education students to be in the car with you. Your parent will have to sign approval for you to be upgraded – students of divorced parents must gain approval from the custodial parent.
At age seventeen you may apply for a Class E Driver’s License if you submit with your application written evidence that you have successfully finished thirty six hours of drivers education or a pre-licensing course approved by the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections. If you are transferring to Louisiana and currently have an out of state license, a foreign license, or a military license, or if you live further than twenty five miles from where these courses are offered then these restrictions will be waived.
