NewJersey Drivers Education

If you are under 21 years old or if you have never had a driver license, New Jersey requires that you complete a period of supervised driving (regardless of your age) before getting your drivers license. MVC's Graduated Driver License (GDL) program introduces driving privileges in phases.
There are three options to complete the program though most teens will useThe Early Bird Road which is designed for students ages 16 and over who must complete three (3) phases of training (a) Student Learner’s Permit, (b) Provisional License and (c) Basic Driver License.
To start off you will have to visit an MVC Agency along with a licensed driver instruction and pass a knowledge test which you can study by reading MVC's Driver Manual. You will also be required to pass a vision test, bring 4 forms of identification, show proof that you’ve enrolled in a driving training course, have a signed consent letter from your parent or guardian and pay the required fees. Your permit will be valid for two years and you must always carry it when you are driving a car.
You must obtain practice for a period of at least six months with a driver who is at least 21 years old and licensed for a minimum of three years who occupies the front seat. Only one passenger who is from outside your household is allowed in the car with you, you are not allowed to use any electronic devices in your car and everyone in the car must have a seatbelt. Once you reach the age of 17, have completed the supervised driving period, pass a road test, pass the 6 Point ID Verification you may obtain a provisional drivers license which is valid for one year at which time you must get a basic drivers license. You must observe the following requirements and restrictions while driving with a provisional license:
No driving between 12:01 a.m. and 5 a.m. See GDL Exemptions for exceptions due to employment or religious reasons
Passengers must be from your household. Only one additional person from outside your household is allowed in the vehicle
You can't use cell phones, hand held video games or any other hand held electronic device
Seat belts must be worn at all times
See GDL Exemptions for hours-related exemptions for employment or religious reasons
