Texas Drivers Education
There are forty-six states and District of Columbia which have some form of graduated driver license system enacted. Texas is one of those states.
If you are under the age of 18,
and over the age of 15 provided you are enrolled in an approved drivers
education course you may obtain an Instruction Permit in Texas. Your instruction
permit is good for one year, and you must hold it for a period of not less than
six months in order to apply for a restricted driver’s license. You must also
provide proof that you are (a) enrolled in school, (b) completed school (with
diploma or GED) or (c) are enrolled in a GED program. This documentation must be
dated within 30 days during the school year and within 90 days during the summer
break. It will be required that this proof be presented at each phase of the
graduated driver’s licensing program.
While you hold your instruction permit, you are only allowed to drive if you are in the company of a licensed driver over the age of 21. Once you have held your permit for a minimum of six months, you will be eligible to apply for a Provisional License which allows you to operate a car between 5am and midnight (unless you drive to/from work/school or for a medical emergency), and not more than one passenger under the age of 21 is permitted to be in the car with you unless they are a family member. Your provisional license expires on your birthday after it was issued and may be renewed.
When you reach age 17 and have completed an approved drivers education class or you reach age 18, you will then be eligible for a Class A drivers license with no restrictions.
